GRACE

I woke with a throbbing headache as light poured through the curtain in our bedroom. I groaned, pushing from the bed and yanking them closed before going to the bathroom to brush my teeth.

I looked down at my phone, scrolling through my notifications and I noticed I had a few messages from Ryder. I slid my finger across the screen to see he had sent me an apology for last night and asked if I had given his proposition any thought.

Still deciding – I replied before scrolling to my messages from Ryatt.

Good morning, Kitten – he wrote. – Send me a pic.

Too early – I replied to my husband before pulling up my camera and snapping a pic of my chest.

How long are you going to make me wait? – Ryder texted.

I picked the best image and attached it to my message that read – fine – and sent it to Ryder…

“Oh, my God! What have I done? No, no, no! Unsend! Unsend!”

I quickly sent the image to my husband before pulling Ryder’s messages back up, watching three little dots appear at the bottom of the screen, slowly dying of embarrassment as I waited for his reply. When his message didn’t appear fast enough I typed another message to him that said – please forget you saw that.

Then my phone rang.

“Hello,” I answered, cringing.

“How are you feelin’ this morning, Princess?” His voice was laced with amusement.

“I’ve been better,” I shot back.

“Well, you look great.”

My cheeks were burning. “That was meant for Ryatt.”

“I figured. Want me to forward it to him?”

“What? Absolutely not!”

Ryder laughed. “Listen, Twig’s mom needs me to watch him so she can go to an appointment, and I was gonna take him to the park. I can swing by and get you if you’d like to meet him.”

“Um…” I thought of Ryatt and how adamant he was that I not work for Ryder.

“Unless your dad grounded you for your behavior last night,” he teased.

I rolled my eyes. “Very funny.”

“I’m not trying to cause trouble –”

“I have a feeling that’s exactly what you’re trying to do,” I replied, pressing my teeth into my lower lip.

“Bad habit.” He cleared his throat. “So, what do you say? A little sunshine will cure that hangover in no time.”

I looked around the room. It wouldn’t hurt anything to meet Twig and see if we are a good fit. “I’ll be ready in ten minutes.”

“I’ll be there,” he replied before the line went dead.

I quickly washed my face and pulled my hair up into a ponytail before throwing on a tank top and shorts.

A horn beeped out front just as I gave myself one last glance in the mirror.

I hurried outside to see a sleek black car parked right in front of the entrance. It reminded me of Ryatt’s favorite car that I’d wrecked. Ryder was leaning against the passenger side, tugging open the door for me and making a sweeping gesture with his arm for me to enter.

“I can open my own door.”

“But you shouldn’t have to,” he replied back with a heart-stopping grin.
